SMASHING THE GLASS CEILING - LEADING WOMEN TO SPEAK AT CONFERENCE
We are delighted that several significant leaders are to be keynote speakers at the 15th International Conference for Women Engineers and Scientists. All our keynote speakers have made significant achievements in the fields of science, engineering and business and their addresses are likely to be a highlight of the conference:
- Mrs. Janet Holmes à Court AC, is Chair of the John Holland Group, Chair of Heytesbury Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s largest private companies, Chair of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Black Swan Theatre Company and a Commissioner of Tourism Western Australia. Janet attended the University of Western Australia, majoring in organic chemistry. Janet also maintains a strong interest in medical research and the arts. The National Trust of Australia has included her on its list of 100 Australian Living Treasures.
- Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, DBE, FRS, FRSE, a distinguished astrophysicist, based in the UK who was part of the research team that discovered the first radio pulsars. She is the current President of the Institute of Physics, UK, and the first woman in this role.
- Dr. María Jesús Prieto-Laffargue, a telecommunications engineer, is the first woman to be President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations. She is a prominent figure in the international arena of communications technology and international business.
- Prof Elizabeth Taylor AO, is a leading academic and has been Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering & Health at Central Queensland University since 2006. She is Chair of the Board of Engineers Media, Chair of RedR (Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief) and Chair of the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland.
The conference combines the best of academia and industry to make this
truly a unique conference. Distinguished invited speakers to present on
leadership, innovation and sustainability are:
- Dr Cathy Foley, Chief Research Scientist with CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering
- Di McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Society of New Zealand
- Silvia Tulloch, Managing Director, Dyesol Industries
- Kathryn Fagg, President, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) for Linfox Logistics
- Helen Gluer, Chief Executive Officer, Tarong Energy
- Kathy Hirschfeld, non-executive director, after almost 20 years in leadership and executive roles with BP
- Karen Moses, Origin Energy
Another highlight of the conference is the CEO Circle Panel Discussion chaired by Kathryn Fagg, President, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) for Linfox Logistics and featuring women CEOs and executives from leading Australian engineering organisations. Panel members are:

The conference will also feature a number of invited speakers from the fields of science and engineering. These speakers are important role models for women engineers and scientists and will be speaking about their amazing achievements and leadership journeys.
CONFERENCE FACILITATOR - BERNIE HOBBS, LEADING AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE BROADCASTER
Bernie Hobbs is a popular judge on ABC TV's The New Inventors, and a firm favourite with audiences for her weekly science spots on ABC radio around the country. Bernie has a first class honours degree in biochemistry and microbiology. She has a background in medical research, environmental writing and science teaching, Bernie can tackle tough or technical subjects and bring the driest topics alive for lay or expert audiences.
Bernie has been MC at many important forums and events including the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia, various events for Co-operative Research Centres, the Queensland Government, The Queensland Resources Council, CSIRO, The Australian Society of Medical Research, Brisbane Ideas Festival, The World Congress of Science Journalists and Questacon.

Authors of papers, workshops and posters should note the following KEY DATES. Authors need to be registered by 15 May 2011 to be included in the conference program.
